I recently completed my elective placement at a municipal hospital in Ghana with the support of the Ghana Xchange Volunteer Organization, where I had the opportunity to gain valuable clinical exposure across a range of specialties. The doctors and healthcare professionals I worked with were extremely welcoming and enthusiastic about involving me in ward rounds, clinics, and discussions. I really appreciated how willing they were to teach and to share their experiences — it made the whole elective feel both educational and inspiring. I was able to observe and participate in the management of a wide variety of conditions, many of which are less commonly seen in my home country, which made for an enriching and eye-opening clinical experience. The hospital environment encouraged me to be proactive in seeking out learning opportunities, and I found that taking initiative was key to getting the most out of my placement. This approach allowed me to tailor my timetable and rotate through departments that aligned with my interests, including internal medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and emergency medicine. My time in Ghana not only broadened my clinical knowledge but also gave me a deeper appreciation for global health systems and the challenges faced in resource-limited settings.
